The Sun was always referred to as the source of life. The ancient Egyptians called it Atum and gave it the powers of Horus, the deity of the sky and sun. The Greeks worshiped it as Helios, sometimes referred to as Titan. In the Vedic philosophy, it was called Surya, whilst for the South American empires it was Inti.
